Contest Winner and Survey Question

I probably put way more work into this than I should have. Finished the book on Thursday. Filmed on Friday. Edited and uploaded and edited and uploaded and annotated all Saturday. Seriously, getting the vote system in place was a pain. Was it worth it? I'll give it a few more tries and see if I can streamline the processs and maybe get more interaction from my 3D scholars.

This week I hope to set up a pateron, and your votes will help me decide if it should be Video based or Project based. In truth this is a terrible survey. I just wanted to see if I could do it, you know, and this was the stupid question that was on my mind that day. So regardless of the results this won't be the last quiz and I'll make the next one better.

Download the birdcage chess set FTW

And here I thought I wouldn't have anything to write about.

I've entered my birdcage chess set and functional small engine pull handle replacement into MyMiniFactory's support free 3D printing competition and if I may say so my birdcage chess set totally deserves to win this one because more than any other entry this one doesn't look like it should print without supports. But it does. Because I am a master of overhang and bridging.

But I need your help to win. Here's what you do:

  1. Click this link.
  2. Click the "Free Download" button.
  3. Enter your e-mail address and in a few minutes you'll get an e-mail with a download link.
  4. Like the design before you go.
  5. Download the model from the e-mail.
  6. Then do the same with this link.
After that you can delete it or whatever you want to do. The only thing that counts is downloads. (Downloads from the same IP e-mail address don't count.)

The download/vote period is until the 14th. Thanks for all your help.

Win a 3D printer in the 3D Printing Forum contest

I am remiss that I haven't mentioned this before. 3D Printing Forum is having a contest, the first prize is a DaVinci 3D printer and all you have to do is participate in the forums.
I mean they're being pretty transparent about the whole thing. They want more people to use their forums so they are bribing you to use their forums and tell other's about their forums. I can get behind honestly like that.

So, if you're not already a member, go sign up at 3D Printing Forum, post messages, share this contest with others, and maybe you'll win. Good luck.

Chessbot wins again!

The winners of the PinShape Kids' Toy Design Contest are out, and in first place is... The Chessbot transforming robot chess set. I was rooting for the Modwheels or Cybot, but I guess you can't beat an old classic. For winning I'll be receiving a Cintiq tablet, a copy of ZBrush, credits for professional 3D prints from sculpeo, and a print of the chess bot given to the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, which is pretty cool.

By the way, if you don't have a 3D printer and want a chess bot, but $60 for half a set seems a bit steep, this was designed for home 3D printers. You can always download it for free then go on 3DHubs or MakeXYZ and find a 3D printer near you. I promise I won't get offended.

Another design contest

CGTrader is a site that I considered when planning to sell my 3D models for 3D printing. It's still an option if Ponoko ever falls out of favor, but CGTrader is less about 3D printing and more about, just, 3D which I think would be confusing if my Mom were shopping for models for her theoretical $300 3D printer. But CGTrader is good and I have nothing bad to say about them.

CGTrader is having a Valentine themed design contest. If you can already do 3D design you can enter and win... wow, a lot of great prizes including a 3D printer. And if you can't do 3D design I'll have contest for you soon.
